Oingo Boingo: Who Do You Want to Be Today
The beginnings of my life as a music nerd. When I saw the original posting about the Music War, I loved the idea instantly and secretly wished that I would have been in NY in ‘99 with you guys to join in on this. Thanks for asking me to participate as a guest in this iteration!
So I figured I start with a posting about where my voyage as a music nerd all began. Growing up in LA in the early 80’s, it was all about KROQ and Jed the Fish, Rodney on the Roq. The station was cutting edge and played bands that weren’t on MTV, and it turned me onto a whole new world of music. The most important and exciting to me, at that time, was Oingo Boingo. They were a local band and adored by a dedicated following in LA. They were well known in LA for there energetic live shows, particularly their Halloween shows at the Greek Theater. They were like nothing I had heard or seen - high energy, mixing horns with edgy rock, and a frontman that seemed like a normal guy but you knew there was something a little odd, almost scary, about him.
Of course, Danny Elfman along with Steve Bartek have gone onto fame and notoriety in the world of TV and film scores, especially for their work with Tim Burton. I also can’t hear the theme song of the Simpsons without thinking of Oingo Boingo for just a brief moment.
I picked the song, Who Do You Want to be Today, and a live version from 1985 because I think this is representative of what they did best. Hope you enjoy - you may be nerd, if you do. (JayVee)
My friend Max sent me this link. Click the header there to see a segment on the famous NYC Fiorucci store from the 1970s American TV show Real People. (That show was sort of the way we eavesdropped on other people’s lives through our TVs long before we had YouTube and tumblr.) Clips of this segment were used in The Nomi Song. Klaus talks and sings a bit of “Lightning Strikes,” Joey talks about painting his face everyday, other scenesters talk, and there are lots of reactions from bystanders watching the Fiorucci crowd dancing in the store window. A lot of the bystanders weren’t getting it, but there’s one lady who seemed pretty into it… I’ll bet she went in and bought herself some black lipstick and a two-tone bodysuit immediately after her interview. ;)
In the comments section there are a couple of interesting anecdotes about that whole scene. The video and those comments make me feel a bit jealous (not for the first time) that I was only six years old and living several states to the south at the time. I know people like to talk about how dangerous New York City was in the 1970s, but from a musical and artistic standpoint it must have been magnificent to behold.
